TAPA Center offers Net/tele conference on law enforcement programs to improve responses to people with mental illness

On Wednesday, February 11, 2004, the TAPA Center for Jail Diversion, a branch of the National GAINS Center for People with Co-Occurring Disorders in the Justice System, will present a Net/Tele training conference from 2:00-3:30 pm E.S.T. to educate listeners about how law enforcement agencies implement programs to improve responses to people with mental illness. Participants will listen to the presentation via telephone (toll-free) while viewing a PowerPoint presentation via the internet (optional).

National expert Melissa M. Reuland of the Police Executive Research Forum, will present findings from a survey of law enforcement agencies identified as using specialized responses to situations involving people with mental illness. This will include discussion of:

  • The core elements of specialized police-based models of response to people with mental illness and how they are being translated into practice
  • The steps involved in implementing these models
  • The lessons learned in overcoming challenges to program implementation

The TAPA Center asks that participants register in advance. Information on how to register is available in this PDF file; for more information, call the Center at 866-518-TAPA.
