PBS's FRONTLINE to Air Program on Mental Illness in Ohio Prisons

PBS's weekly news program FRONTLINE will explore the topic of mental illness and treatment in correctional
settings in an upcoming program, "The New Asylums." The program is based on FRONTLINE reporters' observations gleaned from prison facilities throughout Ohio, including prison therapy sessions, mental health treatment meetings, crisis wards, and prison disciplinary tribunals.

The program will air on Tuesday, May 10th, 9pm (check local listings).

To supplement the television broadcast, FRONTLINE has created a web site. While the site is currently not fully operational, it will soon provide:
  • Background on the making of this FRONTLINE special;
  • A state-by-state interactive map showing the treatment, facilities, and resources available for mentally ill
    prisoners in each state;
  • Information on organizations helping mentally ill prisoners re-enter society and legislation pending in states
    and Congress;
  • More on the de-institutionalization movement of the 1970s, the problems of recidivism, the state of Ohio's
    program, and other special reports;
  • Extended interviews with key experts who appeared in the film; streaming video of the full program; and background readings;
