SAMHSA Announces Availability of Mental Health Transformation State Incentive Grants

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently announced the availability of its Mental Health Transformation (MHT) State Incentive Grants (SIGs). The grants - which will fund between 6 and 13 states for up to five years with between $1.5 to $3 million each - will support an array of infrastructure and service delivery improvement activities to help grantees build a solid foundation for delivering and sustaining effective mental health and related services.

Grantees will be required to use their MHT SIG awards to address each of the goals of the President's New Freedom Commission Report on Mental Health. Particularly relevant to people with mental illness who become involved with, or are at risk of becoming involved with, the criminal justice system, the Report's Goal 2: Mental Health Care is Consumer and Family Driven discusses mental health services in correctional facilities (p. 32) and mental health problems in the criminal justice and juvenile justice systems (p. 43). The Commission Report's overall goal is to increase the availability of high-quality services and overcome the existing fragmentation.

The grant is limited to the immediate Office of the Chief Executive Officer in States, Territories, the District of Columbia and Federally recognized Tribes or Tribal Organizations. The application due date is June 1, 2005.
