"Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act of 2003" marked up by Senate Judiciary Committee and reported by Chairman Hatch

On October 23, 2003, the Senate Judiciary Committee completed their mark-up of the "Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act of 2003" and Chairman Orrin Hatch reported the bill to the Senate favorably.

S.1194 was introduced June 5 by Senator Mike DeWine to assist state and local governments grappling with the overrepresentation of people with mental illness in the criminal justice system. Representative Ted Strickland (D-OH) introduced a companion bill, H.R. 2387 (PDF file), in the House.
