The second part of Working with Data for Mental Health Court Practitioners presented perspectives on data analysis, including considerations for doing cost-benefit analyses and offer suggestions for generating data-based communications for internal and external audiences. Andrew Barbee, senior research associate at the CSG Justice Center, presented different types of data analysis and offered suggestions for how to use analysis for program management and research. Cynthea Kimmelman-DeVries, director of administrative services at the Bronx Mental Health Court (N.Y.), one of the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Mental Health Court Learning Sites, discussed developing data-based communications for different audiences.

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), U.S. Department of Justice, has released its fiscal year 2010 solicitation for Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program (JMHCP) grant applications. The program was authorized by the Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act of 2004 (MIOTCRA) and promotes coordination among criminal justice, juvenile justice, mental health, and substance abuse agencies.

On October 6, the Justice Center launched the National Reentry Resource Center, an unprecedented initiative to advance the safe and successful return of individuals from prisons and jails to their communities. Among those served by the resource center will be states, tribes, territories, local governments, service providers, nonprofit organizations, and adult and juvenile corrections institutions.

The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved its appropriations bill for the U.S. Department of Justice for fiscal year 2010, which provides $10 million for the Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act (MIOTCRA). The version of the bill that passed the House of Representatives in June provides $12 million for MIOTCRA. The Department of Justice appropriations bill now moves to the full Senate for consideration. A detailed list of Department of Justice programs is below.
