The CSG Justice Center and the
National Institute of Corrections (NIC) are working together to foster partnerships between corrections and mental health agencies. These partnerships are designed to improve the continuity of care for people with mental illnesses returning to the community after incarceration or under community supervision, reduce recidivism, and make communities safer and healthier.
The Justice Center and NIC are working intensively in a number of jurisdictions where corrections and mental health leaders have made it a priority to increase collaboration between their systems. These jurisdictions have demonstrated a history of innovation, have focused on a specific issue area around which they would benefit from technical assistance, and have expressed a willingness to share their successes and setbacks with other jurisdictions.
To date, the states of Rhode Island and Kansas, and the municipalities of Orange County, Florida; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Travis County, Texas have served as learning sites.
